Haiku from A to Z
As part of the April A to Z Blog Challenge, I discovered the site Haiku Heights, which posted haiku on each letter of the alphabet with a different theme each day. I thought I’d play along, so here are my alphabetical haiku, for your reading pleasure:
ASCENT (April 1)
climb ever higher,
reach for pinnacles, focus,
dare to dream bigger
BUTTERFLY (April 2)
orange monarch flits
across my windshield – quick! fly!
live another day
CANDLE (April 3)
burning through the night
aflame at both ends,
illuminating journeys
DRONE (April 4)
the bagpipe never
said no, its voice hopeful dirge
rumbling low and slow
EGGSHELLS (April 5)
tiptoe past tulips,
plant more seeds, open minds,
cradle eggshells spent
FIRE (April 6)
spring: cold hearth empty
winter: blazing logs crackle
summer: sun burning
GRASSHOPPER (April 8)
playing his fiddle
careless in the summer grass
storm’s a-brewin’
HUNTER (April 9)
hi-ho, howling hunger!
he hucks hunks high, hacking
hundred halibut
INCENSE (April 10)
increasing intensity
inhaling indigo
incantations
JASMINE (April 11)
perfuming festivities
white flowers floating
on gentle breezes
KOI POND (April 12)
Lazy orange flash
comes into focus, jumbo
goldfish floating past
LILY (April 13)
Lady of the valley
white skirts freshly scented
enchanting echo
MORNING MIST (April 15)
Dew drops in, freshly
squeezed, cooling parched plant throats,
respite from drought
NIGHTINGALE (April 16)
texting tweeter types
furious missives all night:
“tweet tweet tweet tweet tweet!”
P IS FOR PATISSERIE (April 18)
pretty pâtisseries primly placed
paper paid, pastries procured
perfection!
QUTUB MINAR (April 19)
quiet, contemplate
phallic sandstone structure
querulous red dust
ROSEMARY (April 20)
“Rosemary’s for memory,”
Ophelia says,
drowning her sorrows
SHADOW (April 22)
boxing the darkness
fearing no man, black or white,
jumping at shadows
TSUNAMI (April 23)
wave after wave curls
endless shifting seascape hurls
itself ashore
UPROOT (April 24)
underground, pushing
for escape, shifting contents
settle in new life
VOLCANO (April 25)
violent volcano
lava: vim and vigor
anger cools to rock
WATERFALL (April 26)
don’t go chasing ’em,
especially Niagara –
barrel overboard!
XEROX (April 27)
X-rated copies
swish past at speed of orgasm
simulated sex
YOUNGLING (April 29)
little one, learning,
elders set examples, one
day you’ll fly solo
ZEBRA CROSSING (April 30)
offset stripes painted
white on black forever, or
are they black on white?
