Another popular member of the San Diego burlesque scene is the Pixie Stixx Dancers Burlesque troupe.
Headed by Coco L’Amour, the group has been around since 2009, with the current lineup of Skyy Masters, Lalo Starr, Jaguar, Missy Devore, Lucy May, Remy Rouge, Kandy Hart, Sucre Juliet, Sweet Dee and Saphira Stone performing together since 2012.
Coco is a hip hop dancer who’d just dipped a toe into pin-up modeling and the wonderful world of burlesque, but she quickly found other dancers — both male and female — who shared her artistic vision and were eager to join the group.
While the group frequently performs to recordings, they also incorporate live music — including some of local musician/producer Sara Khula’s songs written specially for the Pixie Stixx.
As with all burlesque, this group offers stripteases galore, but their main focus is on storytelling and dancing. With a mix of high energy dance routines, singing and aerialist performances, Coco says she views the Pixie Stixx’s shows as full-on theatrical productions in the modern burlesque style. The combination of modern dance styles with old-school striptease sass and class gets all the performers excited to be onstage and in the limelight.
In addition to her burlesque performances onstage, Coco plans to open a studio dedicated to the art of burlesque this summer, offering classes on body alignment, character development, costuming, peer reviews, and dance techniques. The recent Glitter Tribe Master Classes were a part of the fundraising process for this vision, and you can currently sign up to take Burlesque Fit classes, as well as open level and intermediate burlesque classes with Coco at California Ballet Studios.
California Ballet Studios is located at 4819 Ronson Court in Clairemont Mesa East.
